The Department of Agriculture has started work on creating a forest fire containment axis between Rasquera and El Perelló, aiming to reduce vegetation over 320 hectares to curb fire spread.

The plan involves reducing low-lying vegetation near the Cardó and Boix mountain ranges to prevent fires from reaching priority protection polygons (PPPs) such as the mountains of Tivissa and Vandellòs. This action addresses the abandonment of crops and the intensification of climate change effects, making the area more vulnerable.
This axis, one of five considered priority in Catalonia, has historically been the scene of numerous fires, including those in 1995 and 2012, which burned thousands of hectares, often fueled by the mistral wind. Forestry engineer for the Department of Agriculture in Terres de l'Ebre, Eusebi Casanova, recalled that the 2012 fire nearly spread to the mountains of Tivissa and Vandellòs, prompting discussions about the necessity of this measure.
Initial tasks in the coll de la Granada sector cover 112.47 hectares and involve an investment of 338,342.86 euros. Workers are selectively clearing brush and low vegetation to reduce fuel load and enhance the territory's resilience to fires, particularly extreme ones.
The head of the Emergency Region of Terres de l'Ebre, Ricard Expósito, welcomed the measures, emphasizing their value in improving firefighter efficiency and protecting the population from increasingly complex fires due to the climate crisis. He highlighted the need to reduce fuel continuity to prevent fires from linking different massifs and approaching urban areas.
In addition to the work at coll de les Granades, efforts have begun on 83.84 hectares in Les Collades (El Perelló) with a budget of 237,956.91 euros. Soon, work will commence on another 124.24 hectares in El Perelló, costing 378,248.78 euros. The total investment for this axis amounts to 954,548.55 euros.
The mayor of Rasquera, Àngels Llombart, welcomed the work but expressed concern that it is merely a 'patch' given the immense scale of forest management required. She called for greater investment from the Government for the forest areas of Terres de l'Ebre, especially in conditions of severe drought.
