Vinebre registers 44.1°C, historic high and seventh highest for Meteocat

The Ribera d'Ebre municipality surpasses its own record and approaches the highest temperature ever recorded in Catalonia.

Vinebre, in the Ribera d'Ebre region, reached 44.1°C this Wednesday, the highest temperature ever recorded at this measurement point and the seventh highest for a Meteocat station.

The municipality had already registered 43.7°C on Tuesday, but the mark was surpassed on Wednesday around 4 PM. The day saw highs exceeding 42°C in other areas of Terres de l'Ebre, Priorat, and Alt Empordà. In Barcelona city, the Fabra Observatory recorded 40.7°C, its highest in over 100 years.
Vinebre's record falls just one degree short of the highest temperature ever registered by Meteocat (45.1°C at the Darnius and Navata reservoir on July 18, 2023). The town in Ribera d'Ebre exceeded 40 degrees for four consecutive hours on Wednesday, making it the second warmest day since records began.
Other municipalities in Ribera d'Ebre also recorded unusually high values: Ascó (42.3°C, tying its historic record), the Riba-roja reservoir (42.2°C), and Benissanet (42°C). In Aldover (Baix Ebre), 42.3°C was reached, while in Alt Empordà, Espolla hit 42.2°C and Cabanes 42.1°C. In Priorat, El Masroig marked 42.2°C and Torroja del Priorat 41.8°C.
In Girona city, temperatures surpassed 40°C (41.2°C), as did Lleida (41.3°C), although less widespread than the previous day. Other locations like Sant Martí Sarroca (Alt Penedès) reached 40.3°C, and Anglès (Selva), 40.8°C.
In Barcelona city, the 40.7°C at the Fabra Observatory represents the historic maximum for this automatic weather station since 1914. At the Zona Universitària, 39.6°C was reached, and in El Raval, 38.3°C, both being the second highest values in the last two decades.
