A new citizen platform has organized in Ribera d'Ebre to foster public debate on the potential installation of an artificial intelligence gigafactory in Móra la Nova, warning of its high consumption and low job creation.

The collective, named 'Stop the AI Gigafactory', is presenting this Thursday evening at the Casal de Miravet. The organization expresses its concern about the lack of information and transparency surrounding this project, which could become one of Europe's largest facilities in its field.
The platform's promoters warn that the gigafactory would have very high energy and water consumption, require a large public investment, and at the same time, generate few jobs. Furthermore, they question the technological model it promotes, considering that it could destroy jobs in other sectors.

"We saw that it was a necessity for the territory and a service to create a platform and inform people of all the consequences of a gigafactory like the one they want to install."

The initiative stems from the union of social, trade union, and environmental entities in the region, after a colloquium on the project in Móra la Nova was prohibited, which was finally held successfully in the neighboring municipality of Móra d'Ebre. Among the organizations driving the movement are CGT, GEPEC-EdC, Ecologistes en Acció, Terra Alta Viva, Sediments, and Terra i Pau.
Based on the operation of other similar industries, it is estimated that a 600-megawatt gigafactory could consume between 12 and 24 million liters of water daily and an amount of energy equivalent to that of a country like Malta or Latvia. The projected public investment would range from 3,000 to 5,000 million euros, for the creation of approximately 150 jobs.

"We have public social services that are quite strained and collapsed, especially healthcare and education, and at the same time they want to invest an amount of millions of euros that would almost solve all the problems we have in Terres de l'Ebre."

The platform also expresses concern about the potential construction of new energy infrastructures, such as very high voltage lines (MAT), and questions the economic and technological model associated with these projects, especially due to their impact on employment and data protection, as well as the concentration of power in a few corporations.
