Sunday afternoon is expected to bring a complicated meteorological situation to the northern third of Catalonia. The Catalan Meteorological Service (Meteocat) has warned of the possibility of strong storms in a dozen counties of the Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees, where rainfall exceeding 20 millimeters in 30-minute periods is expected. These downpours could be accompanied by electrical storms and, locally, by hail.
This forecast has led to a danger level 2, or moderate, alert for rain and the associated risk of flooding across the affected territory. The counties highlighted by Meteocat include La Selva, Osona, La Garrotxa, Ripollès, Berguedà, Cerdanya, Solsonès, Alt Urgell, Pallars Sobirà, Pallars Jussà, and Alta Ribagorça.
“"The downpours will be accompanied by storms and it is possible that locally by hail."
Given this situation, Civil Protection has activated the Inuncat plan from midday until Sunday evening for the northern third of the Principality. Authorities have advised citizens to exercise extreme caution, especially those who need to drive or have planned outdoor activities.
The meteorological situation will remain unstable throughout Monday. After a calmer Sunday night and a Monday morning with occasional showers in the interior of the Girona counties, Ripollès, or Berguedà, storms will intensify again in the afternoon and evening. The Aran Valley is added to the intense rainfall zone, while La Selva and the rest of the coast are excluded from the alert. Storms with an electrical component are expected in Ripollès, Berguedà, Alt Urgell, and Pallars Sobirà. The coastal region of Girona and Empordà, including Alt Empordà, will remain cloudy but without significant rainfall.
