A former socialist mayor of Ripoll has decided to leave the PSC, adding to the loss of another former mayor, in protest against the party's leadership regarding local councillors.

The Partit dels Socialistes de Catalunya (PSC) has seen its last former mayor in Ripoll decide to revoke his party membership. This decision comes after the forced departure of two socialist councillors who abstained in the municipal budget vote, thereby allowing its approval by the mayor.
This situation leaves the PSC without any of its former mayors in the town. The first, who held office between 1979 and 1993, had already left the party in 2017, not due to issues related to the independence process, but because of disagreement with the PSOE's abstention that facilitated the investiture of a Spanish government president in 2016.

"They wanted to avoid the media circus of a year ago and for Aliança to play the victim again because the budgets would have been approved anyway, but the leadership has not respected municipal autonomy and has treated Ripoll as if it were a branch of Baix Llobregat."

The former mayor, who was a party member for forty years and represented the PSC in the Ripoll City Council for 26 years in two stages (from 1983 to 2003 and from 2007 to 2013), has defended the actions of the outgoing councillors. He has sharply criticized the party's leadership for not respecting municipal autonomy and for its handling of the crisis.
Furthermore, he lamented that, after so many years of struggle to maintain the PSC's presence in a complex territory, the situation has ended this way. He also pointed out that the cordon sanitaire against an extreme-right party has not worked, as another political formation would have backed down at crucial moments, allowing the mayor to retain her position.
The refusal of other candidates to replace the two resigning councillors suggests, according to the former mayor, a widespread disagreement with the leadership's decision. Sources from the PSC federation in the Girona regions have confirmed they are looking for replacements, both in Ripoll and the wider region, but have not yet found them. Thus, the two seats of the socialist representatives will remain empty in the next municipal plenary session.
