Farmers in the Lleida region declared 6,345 hectares affected by fires last year, primarily in Segarra, with compensation expected to exceed 2 million euros this year.

Last year, farmers in the Lleida region declared a total of 6,345 hectares and over a thousand farms affected by fires. These figures are largely due to the blazes that occurred in Segarra, centered in Torrefeta i Florejacs. In this context, the state agricultural insurance company, Agroseguro, recorded a historic coverage record, with 20,740 hectares affected across the country.
Initial estimates for the current campaign indicate that compensation for agricultural production damages due to fire will exceed 2 million euros. So far, 15,800 hectares have been accounted for nationwide, with 1,454 of those in the Lleida region.
Agroseguro has received fire damage claims for a total of 15,842 hectares this year, predominantly agricultural crops. This figure is provisional and is expected to rise as farmers report recent damages once they can access the affected areas.
While fires primarily affect forest areas, the scale of some recent fires also impacts populated areas and agricultural holdings. According to Agroseguro, the area damaged in 2026 is already the second highest in the last decade, confirming the increasing impact of fires on agricultural production.
Over the past decade, more than 116,500 hectares of agricultural land have been declared damaged. Additionally, 593 claims have been registered for livestock farms, excluding compensation for the collection and destruction of deceased animals.
The year 2025 marked the previous record, with over 20,700 hectares burned, mainly due to the fires in Segarra (over a thousand farms and 6,345 hectares of cereal affected) and those in León (over 700 agricultural hectares).
Fires with the largest damaged areas typically occur in June, coinciding with the start of the winter cereal harvest.
The declared damaged area in 2026 extends across 41 provinces. The most affected exceed a thousand hectares: Seville (2,030 ha.), Huesca (1,559 ha.), Córdoba (1,489 ha.), and Lleida (1,453 ha.). Over 90% of the damages correspond to herbaceous crops, but they also affect others like sunflowers, nuts, olives, vineyards, and citrus fruits.
The largest fires this year have been located in the Ebro Valley, with 1,200 agricultural hectares burned in La Litera (Huesca) and 600 hectares in Segarra.
Provisional compensation for this year is expected to exceed 2 million euros. Over the last 10 years, Agroseguro will have paid out more than 22 million euros in compensation for fire damage to crops. In Catalonia, since 2017, indemnities totaling 1,820,646 euros have been received.
