The Arnau de Vilanova University Hospital in Lleida will increase the availability of mechanical thrombectomies for severe strokes starting June 1st, extending from five hours daily Monday to Friday to twelve hours every day of the week.

This significant improvement in stroke care has been confirmed by the Government spokesperson, Sílvia Paneque, following the Executive Council meeting. The decision to expand the service was approved by the CatSalut management last week, according to information provided to council members.
The Minister of Health, Olga Pané, explained in statements to the newspaper SEGRE that this expansion is possible thanks to the training of two specialists by the Vall d'Hebron Hospital in Barcelona, who will join the Lleida service.

"The training is complex, lasts 18 months, and requires doctors to have participated in the care of at least one hundred severe cases under supervision for full validation."

Both the Lleida City Council and the Provincial Council had urged this expansion, as the Lleida demarcation had fewer resources compared to Barcelona and Girona, where hospitals already offer 24-hour thrombectomies. In Tarragona, the service is available twelve hours Monday to Friday and an expansion is also expected.
