Catalonia records coldest winter morning with temperatures dropping to -17 ºC

The intense polar cold wave froze the interior and the Pyrenees, reaching minimums not seen since 2021 and 2012 in several key locations.

The intense cold wave affecting Catalonia peaked yesterday, January 8, 2026, with temperatures plummeting to -17 ºC in the Pyrenees and setting record lows across the interior.

According to Meteocat, minimum temperatures ranged between -5 and -10 ºC across much of the interior and pre-coastal sectors, while the Pyrenees registered values between -10 and -15 ºC, or even lower. This morning was the coldest since January 6, 2021.
The Vilanova de Meià station, in Noguera, was one of the most notable points, recording -8.4 ºC. This value had not been reached since the cold wave of February 2012, almost fourteen years ago.

Other extreme records include -17 ºC in Bonaigua (at 2,266 meters), -11 ºC in Vielha and Pont de Suert, and -10 ºC in La Seu d’Urgell. Even in the Catalan capital, the Fabra Observatory in Barcelona measured -1.6 ºC, the lowest temperature since February 28, 2018.
The intensity of the cold was particularly felt in the province of Lleida, where -8 ºC was recorded in Tornabous and Tremp. Other regional capitals suffered sub-zero temperatures such as Sort (-6.7 ºC), Solsona (-6.5 ºC), Mollerussa (-6.1 ºC), and Lleida city (-5.1 ºC). Furthermore, snow affected circulation on four roads, including the N-230 in the Vielha tunnel and the C-28 in Arties.
