This initiative is part of the Integral Plan for the Historic Center and is the first of four areas designated for expropriation in the neighborhood to promote the construction of new housing. Throughout this month, work will be done to resolve the received objections.
The mayor has linked this operation to the goal of restoring habitability to the neighborhood, noting that the Paeria has already secured municipal ownership of almost all plots in Plaça del Depòsit. This will enable active policies for affordable and sustainable housing, equipped with elevators and aerothermal systems, intended for those wishing to live in the Historic Center.
During the presentation of the upcoming edition of 'Obert al Centre Històric', the mayor also announced other projects within the Integral Plan. Soon, the renovation project for the area surrounding the La Panera Art Center will be presented. This will integrate the former church of Sant Martí and include new sustainable spaces for neighborhood activities. Construction is expected to begin next year. Additionally, plans are underway for the former Cervantes school to house the headquarters of the Consorci de Normalització Lingüística (Linguistic Normalization Consortium).
In parallel, the City Council has an open call for subsidies to promote local businesses, with a budget of 180,000 euros in direct aid for the opening of neighborhood commercial establishments, aiming to boost year-round activity in the area. The Paeria has also put out to tender a sociocultural revitalization contract for the Historic Center worth 1.3 million euros, an unprecedented investment that will support areas such as education and community mediation.
