The financial downfall began after a disastrous fruit season caused by frost and a lack of insurance. To keep their business running, the couple took out several loans, but rising interest rates eventually made the debt impossible to repay.
The farmers explained that their decision to sell exclusively to a buyer in Barcelona prevented them from exporting their goods. Additionally, the introduction of new fruit varieties on the market made their traditional crops less competitive.

The ruling was made under the Second Chance Law. Their legal representative noted that this case highlights the struggles of many farmers facing extreme weather and high production costs in the Segrià region.
