The city of Lleida is preparing for a significant influx of labor, with an estimated 500 new workers expected to join the workforce weekly until June, thanks to an extraordinary migrant regularization process.

This initiative, driven by the Lleida City Council, aims to integrate thousands of people already residing in the city into the formal labor market. According to local authorities, there is no need to seek labor from outside when there are already residents with the potential to contribute to the local economy.

"There's no need to look for workers elsewhere when we can regularize those who already live here. These people didn't arrive yesterday."

The regularization process will not only benefit applicants, who must meet requirements such as residing in Spain since August 1st and having no criminal record. It will also have a significant economic impact on Lleida's productive sector, which will see an increase in its labor availability.
In the short term, provisional residence and employment authorizations, stemming from the 400 weekly in-person appointments available at Post Office and Social Security offices, are expected to generate a steady flow of new workers. In the medium and long term, each formalized job will contribute to the tax and social protection system, with an estimated 28.50 euros monthly in withholdings and 505.83 euros in contributions for each 40-hour weekly employment.
If the forecast of regularizing 7,500 people is met and they are employed full-time, four million euros monthly could be generated in revenue, plus those derived from VAT and special taxes due to increased consumption capacity. Currently, many of these individuals work in the underground economy.
To facilitate the process, the Paeria has set up an office in Mercolleida with 16 employees (12 administrative staff and 4 social workers). This office can assist 240 migrants daily until June 30th, aiming to manage necessary municipal documentation, such as vulnerability reports and census certificates. It is expected to serve over 9,000 undocumented families in the city.

"The multiplication yields this result, but we don't have a specific figure as a forecast due to the very nature of the process."

Furthermore, the entity Pagesos Solidaris, from UP (Unió de Pagesos), has been accredited as a collaborator to support foreigners for one year during the procedures, provided they are employed for at least three months of the first year to renew their permit.
