A 57-year-old resident of Alcoletge lost his life on Wednesday due to cardiac arrest. The incident occurred at Tossal dels Morts, a site designated by the town council for observing the astronomical phenomenon, moments before the total solar eclipse began.
The Medical Emergency System (SEM) deployed four ambulances to attend to the situation. According to SEM sources, it cannot be confirmed at this time that heatstroke was the trigger for the cardiac arrest; this will be clarified by the autopsy.
“"He may have suffered heatstroke which ultimately caused cardiac arrest."
The town's mayor, Josep Maria Gras, told this newspaper that the healthcare professionals who attended the deceased suggested the possibility of heatstroke as the probable cause of the cardiac arrest.
As a consequence of this death, the local council decided to cancel the festive events scheduled for after the eclipse, including the community dinner and the music party. However, the eclipse observation activity was maintained.
