The Ministry of the Interior has appointed María Pilar Callejero Cornao as the new commissioner of the National Police in Lleida, making her the first woman to hold this position in the region.

Callejero takes over from Antonio Royo, who was removed from office just weeks after his appointment. The dismissal followed reports of a 2003 conviction against Royo for sexual harassment of a subordinate during his time in Guipúzcoa.
This leadership change comes at a sensitive time for the National Police, following the recent resignation of the force's operational deputy director, who is currently under investigation for an alleged sexual assault.
The appointment of the new commissioner in Lleida is seen as a symbolic and practical step towards modernization and gender equality within the high-ranking positions of the Spanish security forces.
