The city of Lleida marks the 52nd anniversary of the opening of the Pont Nou, a vital infrastructure inaugurated on July 7, 1973, which helped alleviate traffic on the National II highway.

Now known as the pont dels Instituts, the Pont Nou was a major milestone for urban mobility at a time when Lleida only had the pont Vell to cross the Segre river. The inauguration was led by the Minister of Public Works, Gonzalo Fernández de la Mora, during the late Francoist period.
Built by Sorigué Zamorano SA with a budget of 120 million pesetas, the project involved moving 300,000 cubic meters of earth. This new route allowed long-distance traffic between Madrid and Barcelona to bypass the city's historic center for the first time.
