Last Sunday was a bittersweet day for sports in Lleida. On one hand, Pons Lleida Llista achieved a historic milestone by winning its fourth Europe Cup, consolidating an excellent track record for a club with decades of history. Simultaneously, Hiopos Lleida defeated Barça at Barris Nord, leaving them one step away from mathematical permanence in the ACB league, with a fully dedicated fanbase.
However, this joy was overshadowed by the worrying situation of football in the city. Lleida CF, which already lost its category the previous year due to debts, is now on the verge of another relegation that could lead to its disappearance due to economic unviability, despite the support of some 2,000 loyal fans.
For its part, Atlètic Lleida, which brought together local businesses but failed to generate a strong social bond, lost a category it had obtained in offices last summer, by acquiring the spot of Lleida CF. This situation adds to the decline and subsequent disappearance of the historic UE Lleida, painting a bleak picture for football in the capital of Segrià.
“"Lleida is a football city."
The economic and sporting management of recent years has generated a debate about whether Lleida is truly a city with a strong football culture. The lack of elite football is perceived as a factor affecting the city's self-esteem, and the responsibility of the various parties involved, including politics, in this situation is questioned.
