The Student Council of the University of Lleida (UdL) reported this February a steady decline in the use of the Catalan language in classrooms, particularly within postgraduate programs.

Data shows that Catalan instruction in undergraduate degrees fell from 82.7% in 2016 to 72.9% in 2024. The most concerning drop occurred in master's degrees, where Catalan usage plummeted from 62.7% to 39.1% over the same period.

"We demand that the Language Plan becomes a living tool with concrete measures and transparent monitoring."

Professor Enric Llurda noted that university internationalization often favors dominant languages like English over local ones. Currently, only 15% of doctoral theses at UdL are written in Catalan, while English and Spanish each account for over 40% of research papers.
