Around 5,000 protesters marched through Lleida this Wednesday during a regional education strike to demand higher salaries, more resources, and lower student-to-teacher ratios in classrooms.

The demonstration, which gathered 5,000 people according to the Mossos d'Esquadra, began at Ricard Viñes Square and ended at the Government delegation in Catalunya Square. Early morning protests also led to traffic closures on the Universitat Bridge and the Ll-11 highway.
Although the Department of Education reported a 11.9% turnout across Catalonia, local data from Lleida schools suggests a much higher impact. In centers such as Enric Farreny or the Manuel de Montsuart high school, the strike participation reached 80% among teaching staff.

"We are asking for lower ratios, more support and teachers in the classrooms, as well as equalizing our salary with the rest of the teachers in the State."

The Secretary for Educational Improvement, Ignasi Giménez, expressed hope that a proposal to be presented on February 19 will mark a turning point in negotiations. The plan includes salary increases, though the Government maintains that these improvements depend on the approval of the new budget.
