This unique double degree in Spain has trained nearly 300 professionals since its inception, with a notable female majority, as three-quarters of the graduates are women. Its high employment rate, reaching 96%, underscores the program's success.
To commemorate these ten years, the Higher Technical School of Agrifood, Forestry and Veterinary Engineering (ETSEAFiV) at the UdL has organized a week of public activities, taking place from April 20 to 23. The program includes talks, a pet walk, and a demonstration by the Firefighters' Canine Search Group, among other proposals.
“"Veterinary Medicine was a strategic project for the center and key for the livestock sector, as it opted for a more professional vision of the livestock production sector, as well as a public health vision and a clinical and animal welfare vision."
The director of ETSEAFiV, Jaume Arnó, highlighted that the Veterinary Medicine degree was a fundamental commitment for the institution, oriented towards a professionalized perspective of the livestock sector, public health, clinical practice, and animal welfare. Arnó added that 50% of the students come from various regions of Spain, such as Andalusia, Aragon, or Extremadura, and also from France, and that many of them choose to stay and work in Lleida after completing their studies.
The implementation of the double degree in 2015 was accompanied by continuous improvement in infrastructure. Currently, the school has Veterinary Hospital Services on the ETSEAFiV campus and the Teaching Surgical Unit in Torrelameu, which will soon be expanded with an adjacent horse enclosure. Additionally, the construction of a new experimental dairy cow farm in Mollerussa is being processed, which will support both practical training and research.
Among the activities scheduled for the celebration, a talk on mental health in the veterinary sector stands out, a sensitive issue that the Deputy Director of Campus and Veterinary Strategic Development, Irina García-Ispierto, has emphasized as crucial. A pet walk will also be organized, which has already attracted a hundred registrants, with the collaboration of the Refugi dels Peluts de Lleida to promote adoption. A hackathon for students and a demonstration by the Firefighters' Canine Search Group, with dogs specialized in tracking and scenting, complete the festive program.
