The aid granted by the Catalan Waste Agency during 2023 amounted to 2,165,393.58 euros, benefiting 140 applicants in the Lleida demarcation. This investment will allow for the removal of 112,654 square meters of toxic material, mainly from uralite roofs on sheds and farms, as well as from gutters and fiber cement tanks.
These €2.1 million represent approximately 10% of the total €20,927,629 awarded to 1,122 beneficiaries across all of Catalonia. The Government's overall plan, presented in 2023, aims to eliminate all asbestos from public and private infrastructure before 2032.
Despite the Parliament starting to process a law last March that will make eradication mandatory with heavy fines, suppression is advancing slowly in Lleida. Professional associations estimate the removal cost between 25 and 30 euros per square meter, excluding the necessary investment for material replacement.
The Generalitat estimates there are over 40,000 uralite roofs in the province. However, only 389 aid applications for the removal of this carcinogenic material were registered up until last July.
Subsidies are determined based on the surface area to be removed. For example, areas up to 49 square meters receive a maximum of 2,000 euros, while roofs larger than 1,000 square meters can obtain up to 20 euros per square meter. The grants cover the removal, transport, and treatment of the waste.
