The Minister of Agriculture, Òscar Ordeig, inaugurated the 85th edition of the Tres Tombs de Lleida yesterday with an opening speech at the Paeria, defending the key role of farmers and the Ponent Farmland.

The Paeria de Lleida hosted the inaugural event for the Sant Antoni Abat festivity, marking the start of the 85th edition of this traditional celebration. The speech, delivered by the Minister of Agriculture of the Generalitat, Òscar Ordeig, precedes the historic parade of carriages and agricultural machinery that will culminate next Saturday, Sant Antoni Abat Day, with the blessing of animals.

"We must champion and reinforce the role of the peasantry, which represents the best of our history."

During his address, Ordeig highlighted the importance of agriculture in Ponent, emphasizing the “true uncertainties” facing the sector. He pointed out that the Horta de Lleida (Lleida Farmland) “often has not received the recognition or the facilities they deserve to prosper,” stressing the need to “forge alliances, build consensus, and defend traditions” to guarantee the agricultural future.
This year's edition of the Tres Tombs de Lleida introduces significant changes to the parade route. For the first time, the procession will start at the Firetes venue and pass through the Cappont neighborhood before reaching the Creu dels Tres Tombs. Concurrently, mass in honor of Sant Antoni Abat will be held at the Església de la Sang, followed by the traditional blessing of animals and carriages in Blondel.
To conclude the opening speech, Marc Vives, president of the Els Pagesos Association, presented the Minister with a sculpture representing the peasantry, created by the Lleida artist Monti Mateu, along with a silver badge symbolizing the Creu dels Tres Tombs. The festivities will conclude on Sunday, January 18, at the Teatre Escorxador, following a week of cultural and gastronomic activities.
