Foix, Darnius, Sau, and Susqueda Reservoirs Emptied to Prevent Flooding Ahead of Rains

The Catalan Water Agency increases the release flow, especially at the Foix reservoir, to generate storage capacity before the heavy rainfall.

The Catalan Water Agency has begun the preventive emptying of the Foix, Darnius, Sau, and Susqueda reservoirs to create storage capacity ahead of the intense rain and snow forecast for this weekend.

Given the forecast of intense rainfall and snow in the Pyrenees, the reservoirs of the Catalan internal basins, which currently show very high levels, have started releasing water. This measure seeks to prevent overflows and downstream problems, especially recalling the flooding episode that affected Cubelles in July due to the overflow of Foix.
The Foix reservoir is where the process has been accelerated the most, increasing the release from 85 liters per second to 300 liters per second to maintain it at 80% capacity. Meanwhile, the Susqueda reservoir, the largest in the internal basins and 94% full, is already releasing water strongly through the floodgate, a fact that has doubled the flow of the Ter river downstream, rising from 5,500 to 10,000 liters per second.

"During the Glòria storm we had seen it overflow, but I had never seen the floodgate open."

Protecció Civil (Civil Protection) has activated the Inuncat plan in pre-alert phase and coordinates actions with affected municipalities. Maximum caution is requested due to the possible rise of rivers and streams, especially on the northern coast, where strong waves are also expected, and in the regions of Selva and Baix Empordà.

"No one should ever cross areas where rivers are flowing strongly."

In the city of Girona, the City Council has already taken preventive measures, such as sealing off walking paths near the river, including those at Fontajau. The Security Councillor, Sílvia Aliu, confirmed that access to the Ter river has been closed and active monitoring of the Onyar river flow is being maintained.
