Socialist deputy for Girona, Marc Lamuà, has submitted a written declaration to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe warning about the progressive weakening of the right to peaceful assembly globally.

The initiative has secured the necessary support to be formally admitted, aiming to consolidate a clear European political stance in defense of democratic standards and human rights, according to socialist sources. Lamuà stresses that the right to assembly is fundamental for expression and political participation, recognized in Article 11 of the European Convention on Human Rights.

"Peaceful protest is not a threat to democracy, but one of its most legitimate and necessary expressions."

The declaration places special emphasis on the situation in Iran, denouncing the extreme repression of peaceful demonstrations. The text directly points to the role of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard for the systematic and disproportionate use of force, arbitrary detentions, torture, and executions.

"This repressive apparatus, which acts with total impunity, flagrantly violates international law and human rights, and is absolutely incompatible with the democratic values defended by the Council of Europe."

In this regard, the Socialist Group has also promoted a specific resolution requesting that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard be included in the list of terrorist organizations. This action seeks to provide a clear political response to an actor contributing to regional and international instability.
Finally, the declaration expresses concern about the reduction of civic space in the United States, particularly following the indiscriminate actions of the federal agency ICE, endorsed by the Trump Administration. Lamuà calls on European institutions to maintain a demanding position in the defense of fundamental rights.
