Tarragona City Council and the Port of Tarragona have reinforced their joint strategy to control the city's pigeon population, addressing the issue from multiple angles.
The Bilateral Table between the two institutions held a meeting at the Tarragona City Council to follow up on various shared work areas. Cooperation in economic promotion and the strategy to reduce excessive pigeon presence were key points.
The fight against pigeons has been a priority since the Table's inception, as it affects cleanliness, sanitation, public space maintenance, neighborly coexistence, and commercial activity. The City Council's shock plan actions and the Port's measures to reduce pigeon access to port feeding sources were discussed.
The Port of Tarragona has approved a new operational instruction to enhance conditions for handling, transporting, and storing cereals and other bulk products, establishing measures to prevent cargo loss, improve cleaning, and block bird entry into warehouses.
The City Council has implemented a shock plan in 81 critical points in the city center, with an investment of 23,230.79 euros, hiring a specialized company to remove nests and protect urban elements, as well as installing anti-nesting systems.
These interventions have focused on Rambla Nova, Rambla Vella, the Part Alta, and commercial areas, aiming to reduce the nuisance and soiling associated with the presence of these birds.

"The pigeon problem requires a comprehensive, sustained response based on technical criteria. The Port has taken a significant step with the approval of this new instruction, which strengthens control over feeding sources. The Bilateral Table allows us to coordinate actions and work towards ensuring that adopted measures translate into a real improvement in the quality of life in Tarragona."

"Collaboration in the economic promotion of the city and the territory is fundamental for attracting foreign investment and for the reindustrialization of the country. It is essential to work together on issues such as the development of a sustainable economy and energy transition."
The City Council-Port Bilateral Table, established in November 2024, promotes technical working groups to address shared issues such as pigeon control, improving Port-City connectivity, cruise mobility, the transformation of the Part Baixa, and rail access.
