The Official College of Physicians of Tarragona (COMT) has reported a 21.5% increase in assaults against medical professionals during 2025, with a total of 203 cases recorded in Tarragona.

This figure makes Tarragona the leading province in Spain for reported medical assaults. Experts suggest this is due to a higher rate of reporting in the region, though the actual number of incidents could be two or three times higher than official records.

"Every week, four doctors are assaulted in Tarragona, and 6% of active doctors during 2025 were assaulted in one way or another."

Primary care centers are the most frequent locations for these incidents, accounting for 104 cases. Women are disproportionately affected, representing 71% of victims, particularly those under the age of 45. Most conflicts arise from disagreements over clinical decisions and treatments.
The rise of Artificial Intelligence and social media has led to patients arriving with 'hyper-information,' often leading to tension when professional diagnoses differ from their expectations. The COMT is calling for increased security measures, including panic buttons and institutional legal support.
