Construction of the new underground passage on Carrer del Rin in Calafell.

The Calafell Town Hall has awarded the contract for the new underground passage on Carrer del Rin, an infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists that will improve permeability under the railway lines.

The new underpass will connect Carrer del Rin with Carrer del Baixador, restoring the old level crossing and facilitating mobility between the most important commercial hubs of Segur, such as Avinguda de Catalunya and Carrer del Rin. The infrastructure will feature accessible ramps for bicycles and people with reduced mobility.
The initial project had a budget of 2,001,371.57 euros, but the winning company, Artífex, has offered 1,754,500 euros to carry out the works. The Councillor for Urban Strategy, Miguel Ángel Perín, highlighted the priority of this project due to its economic and connectivity relevance.
The works, expected to commence between November and December once ADIF's authorization is processed, respond to a resident demand formalized in 2023. The town hall has completed the project, approval, budgeting, and tender process.
This action is part of a broader plan to improve railway line permeability in Calafell. Soon, underpasses will be designed for Carrer Xúquer (in Segur), Josep Carner (in Mas Mel), and Carme (in La Platja de Calafell), as well as a new footbridge at the Ciutadella Ibèrica.
Councillor Perín concluded that improving sustainable mobility and encouraging walking or cycling will be priorities for the next term, with these passages as key elements.
