New Drainage and Promenade Mitigate Storm Impact on Costa Daurada

New infrastructure in Salou and La Pineda protected neighborhoods from flooding and sped up rainwater drainage.

Two new infrastructure projects in Salou and La Pineda proved effective during the storm on Monday, August 24th, protecting the area from flooding and improving drainage.

The channeling of the Barenys ravine in Salou, still under construction, was crucial in preventing floods in the Salut neighborhood. According to data from the work's management, the system operated at 33% capacity, absorbing approximately 100 cubic meters per second, a significant volume that was successfully channeled with substantial reserve capacity.
Salou's mayor, Pere Granados, praised the utility of the works, noting their effective response to a large volume of water and their role in protecting residents and their properties. This channeling had long been a historical demand from the municipality.
The Barenys project, in its final phase, is scheduled for completion in September, with an investment nearing 20 million euros. The intervention includes an open-air channel and underground sections to enhance drainage capacity.
In La Pineda, the new promenade, inaugurated on April 29th with an investment of around 8.5 million euros, also demonstrated its effectiveness. Its underground drainage system ensured that streets affected by the rain were cleared of water within two to three hours.
This project, which has renaturalized one kilometer of coastline, features an under-promenade drainage system that channels water to galleries ending in grates. The Vila-seca City Council highlighted the system's successful performance.
Despite these improvements, the storm caused other incidents in Salou, such as fallen trees and a wall on private property, and in La Pineda, with downed trees and utility poles, as well as temporary road closures and disruptions on the A7 highway.
