The Minister of Social Rights, Mònica Martínez Bravo, has confirmed that the fraud uncovered in the guardianship system for unaccompanied minors in Tarragona amounts to 1.4 million euros.

The investigation, known as Case AME, revealed a network that brought minors to Catalonia on tourist visas only to abandon them near police stations. This forced the Generalitat to take legal custody. So far, 30 people have been arrested and 22 minors have been returned to their families.

"It has not been considered necessary to start any internal procedure or audit of the guardianship protocols."

Despite the National Police estimating the total fraud at nearly 1.6 million euros, the Government maintains that existing protocols are effective. They argue that social work teams in Tarragona were the ones who first flagged the suspicious cases during routine interviews.
