Employees of International Paper started an indefinite strike this February 24, marching from Plaça Imperial Tarraco in Tarragona to demand the continuity of their jobs.

The demonstration occurred during the second round of negotiations with the company. Antonio Muriana, head of the works council in Montblanc, stated that workers are determined to continue the strike until an agreement is reached, threatening legal action if layoffs begin on March 19.

"Spirits are high and we hope to reach agreements to keep working. The companies are viable."

The most promising solution is the interest shown by Cristian Lay, a company that could guarantee the 200 jobs currently at risk. The Ministry is expected to mediate in the potential sale to prevent the closure of the facilities.
The Mayor of Valls, Dolors Farré, joined the protesters, arguing that the packaging sector is growing and that the planned closures by International Paper and DS Smith are incomprehensible.
