The proposal, promoted by Red Eléctrica Española, Redeia, and the Generalitat, involves a total investment of 200 million euros in the Tarragona region. The new infrastructure will dismantle the current 220 kV line to build a double-circuit one exceeding 600 kV, providing power equivalent to three nuclear reactors.
“"To allow the development of the petrochemical sector in Tarragona."
The main objective is to facilitate the decarbonization of the Tarragona petrochemical sector, replacing nuclear and fossil energy. To achieve this, two new substations will be built in Els Aubals (400 kV) and La Secuita (400 kV/220 kV), and the route will be extended from 150 km to 181 km, featuring towers up to 55 meters high.
The platform No a la MAT, along with entities such as Unió de Pagesos and the DOP Terra Alta, have announced they will submit appeals during the next 30 days. They criticize that the project ignores the real needs of the territory, as energy consumption has significantly decreased in Catalonia since 2008.
“"We are convinced that it will not go ahead. As it is proposed, only consumerism wins, and we all lose."
Local councils in affected municipalities, such as La Selva del Camp and L’Aleixar, also oppose the plan, focusing their appeals on the impact on agricultural land, wildlife, and the proximity of the new towers to urban centers, where the distance to some homes is less than 20 meters.
