The planned investment will transform part of the former industrial building into a modern research center, featuring new laboratories, offices, classrooms, storage areas, and spaces for advanced training and knowledge transfer. This project addresses the sustained growth of the ICAC since its inception in 2003 and the need to expand facilities that have become too small.
The new location for the ICAC, a research center linked to the URV, will foster synergies with the future archaeological park of the Paleochristian Necropolis and other scientific and cultural facilities in Tarragona. The ICAC, part of the CERCA system, specializes in the study of classical archaeology.
The new headquarters represent a significant scale increase, expanding from the current 1,308 m² to 3,122 m² in Warehouse 6. This expansion will enhance scientific and training activities, aiming for a staff of around 80 people, and positioning the ICAC's presence at Tabacalera as a catalyst for a new cultural, university, scientific, and knowledge hub in Tarragona.
The rehabilitation works are scheduled to take place mainly between June 2027 and July 2029, with tender and award processes planned from October 2026 to February 2027. Subsequently, scientific and administrative furniture, as well as laboratory equipment, will be installed, with the relocation anticipated for November and December 2029.
