The book's presentation, part of the “Tamarit” collection, serves as the culmination of the exhibition that the MAM dedicated to Maria Elena Roque during the first six months of 2025. This initiative, promoted by the Diputació de Tarragona, seeks to honor a highly experienced and prestigious creator, born in Camp de Tarragona and with an internationally recognized career.
“"Both the exhibition and the publication serve as a tribute to a multidisciplinary creator of great experience and prestige."
The Diputació has expressed its interest in making female art more visible, as it has often been overshadowed by male prominence throughout history. The book, written by Assumpta Rosés, a Fine Arts graduate and independent curator, includes texts by Roque herself and a review of her life and work, including her fruitful collaboration with Carles Santos from 1986 until his death in 2017.
After interrupting her artistic career due to her father's illness, Maria Elena Roque restarted from Cases d’Alcanar, where she has resided for 40 years. The book and exhibition highlight her uniqueness as an artist and her evolution, including her foray into performance, which she considers more spontaneous and ephemeral. A turning point in Roque's public recognition has been the incorporation of a set of her works into the MAM of Tarragona, as part of the project to exhibit female artists from the region.
