This ecological initiative involves approximately 200 Aran sheep and 40 Rasquera goats, which will progressively cover the forest area. The animals will sleep in mobile enclosures, adapting to the grazing and undergrowth clearing needs.
“"It is a sustainable and ecological way to maintain forests in good condition."
The council has allocated a budget of around 14,000 euros for this project, a significantly lower investment than hiring a specialized company or using the municipal brigade for the same task. This preventive action seeks to anticipate potential fires during the summer season.
The herd, owned by a shepherd from Alcover, usually grazes in the Prades Mountains (including Mont-ral, Farena, and Rojals) and spends winters in Alcover, where the climate is milder. During their stay in Salou, the shepherd will be responsible for moving the animals across the different municipal properties from early morning until evening. Each animal can consume about three kilograms of vegetation daily, with a preference for species such as mastic, bramble, carob, or olive trees.
Furthermore, the complementarity of the two species in clearing has been highlighted: goats focus more on shrubs, while sheep act closer to the ground, ensuring a more complete and effective clearing of the terrain.
