This initiative culminates with Saturday's inauguration, which highlights the military structures preserving underground galleries, chambers, and two firing positions. The main objective is to promote tourism de-seasonalization in the coastal town.
Strategically located between Capellans beach and Llenguadets cove, at Cap Salou, both nests are part of the municipality's historical and military heritage. The new tourist route includes another nest at Punta del Cavall or Punta Grossa, cannon battery complexes on the hills of Talaia and Glorieta, trench structures, and a cobbled path.
The rehabilitation works allowed for the location and recovery of the original access stairs, which were hidden. New stairs have been built, a ventilated patio has been enabled, and the interior galleries and rooms have been restored. Additionally, the side walls have been partially opened to restore the original view towards the horizon and improve cross-ventilation.
“"This is a place steeped in history, which now regains its value. With this action, we open a window to the past to better understand who we are and where we come from."
Currently, negotiations are underway for the cession of machine guns to be placed at the firing points, aiming to offer greater realism to the experience. The space will be accessible through guided tours scheduled for the third weekend of each month, starting next May, available in Catalan and Spanish.
This new tourist offering adds to other proposals in the municipality, such as visits to the Kal·lipolis archaeological site, the Roman Villa of Barenys, or the modernist route. Salou's strategic position has made it a key point of surveillance and defense throughout history, with facilities such as the 16th-century Torre Vella and other fortifications built during the Civil War and the Franco regime.
The inauguration ceremony, open to the public, was part of the program for the International Day for Monuments and Sites. The project has been jointly funded by the Salou City Council and the Diputació de Tarragona.
