Science leaves laboratories to set up in bars in Tarragona and Reus from May 18th to 20th with the Pint of Science festival, offering free talks to bring research closer to citizens.

The science popularization festival Pint of Science is celebrating a new edition in Tarragona and Reus between May 18th and 20th. This initiative aims to bring scientific research closer to the general public through informal and free talks held from 7 PM onwards in various establishments in both cities.
A total of 56 researchers, primarily affiliated with the Universitat Rovira i Virgili and research centers such as the Catalan Institute for Chemical Research (ICIQ), IPHES, CRAG, CNRS, or the Institute of Marine Sciences, will participate in the event. Healthcare professionals from the Catalan Health Institute and the Joan XXIII University Hospital of Tarragona, as well as international researchers from Imperial College London, are also joining.
This year's program covers a wide range of topics. In health and biomedicine, discussions will address issues such as endometriosis, menopause, mental health, the influence of diet on the brain, gut microbiota, or precision medicine, as well as early disease detection and the effects of smoking during pregnancy.
Technology and innovation will also take center stage with content on artificial intelligence, hydrogen energy, smart materials for CO₂ capture, artificial photosynthesis, and uses of nuclear energy. The festival will also reflect on climate change, Mediterranean marine biodiversity, coastal transformation, and ecosystem resilience.
The offering is completed with proposals in archaeology, human evolution, paleoclimatology, and humanities, as well as more curious topics like the scientific study of fungi, plant "communication," or the mathematical analysis of natural forms. All activities are free, and the full program can be found on the festival's official website.
Talks will take place in venues such as Sala Zero Tarragona, 12 Topos, and Totem Cafè in Tarragona, and As de Copes Gastropub and Racó de l’Orfeó Reusenc in Reus. According to Fran Algaba, a researcher at URV and the festival's coordinator for the region, the goal is to "explain science naturally and make it more accessible."
Pint of Science is an international initiative present in 27 countries, with Spain being the second-largest participant, featuring 75 cities and over a thousand talks, establishing itself as a global benchmark for informal science popularization.
