The Spanish State must pay approximately 250 million euros to Enagás for the maintenance and decommissioning of the Castor gas storage facility located off the coast of Alcanar.

A ruling by the Supreme Court on December 4, 2025, confirmed Enagás Transporte's right to compensation. The company had to seek legal action after the Ministry for Ecological Transition failed to respond to their claims for the ongoing work at the site.
The total bill includes 125 million euros for administration and conservation since the company took over, plus 129.6 million euros for the current dismantling phases. The Castor project was halted in 2013 after causing several earthquakes in the region during gas injection tests.

"Enagás has suffered a quantifiable economic loss that it is not obliged to bear."

The legal dispute began in 2018 when previous payment regulations were annulled. Since then, Enagás has continued the mandatory sealing of the wells without receiving payment, a situation the court has now addressed to prevent unjust enrichment by the State.
