This achievement places Tarragona at the top of the leaderboard, surpassing other provinces such as Pontevedra, with three wins, and Barcelona, with two. The competition, which simulates business management, recently celebrated its fifteenth edition in Madrid.
In the latest final, held on Friday, April 17, two teams from the Institut Martí Franquès in Tarragona participated. These first-year high school students, aged between 16 and 17, had to manage a virtual dairy product company, making decisions on production, pricing, and marketing strategies to maximize profits over a three-year virtual period.
“"We have to decide on production, pricing, a marketing strategy, setting the price..."
Although they were not among the top performers in this edition, their participation in the final already represents a significant achievement, as they overcame more than 11,000 young people from 406 educational centers to join the select group of the top 340. The Institut Martí Franquès has historically excelled in the competition, being the only center, along with the Instituto San Tomé de Freixeiro in Vigo, to have repeated victories, with triumphs in the 2014 and 2015 editions.
The success is largely attributed to the dedication of the school's economics teachers, who integrate the project into the curriculum of the Business Operations subject. This methodology involves dedicating a significant portion of class hours to the simulation, a time investment that has proven crucial for good results. Furthermore, the school's commitment is reinforced by funding from Repsol, which covers students' travel costs since the first edition.
Beyond the competition, this initiative fosters practical learning and the development of so-called soft skills, such as teamwork, frustration management, and the ability to reach agreements. Although the challenge was initially for second-year high school students, changes in university entrance exams mean that first-year students now undertake this task, adapting to an economic foundation they are still acquiring.
Tarragona's success in this field is not limited to the Institut Martí Franquès. Other centers in the province have also won the competition, such as the Escola Elisabeth in Salou in the first edition in 2012 and La Salle in Tarragona in 2020, demonstrating the quality of business management talent in the region.
