Fishermen from Tarragona are calling on the European Commission for more consistent policies to guarantee the sector's future, following statements by Commissioner Costas Kadis regarding potential quota changes.

Xavier Domènech, secretary of the Tarragona Federation of Fishermen's Guilds, warned that current business uncertainty prevents necessary investments. He argued that while the sector supports scientific criteria, many current EU rules are practically impossible to follow for local boats.

"If you have business insecurity one year ahead, you cannot amortize investments."

The federation specifically criticized the requirement to give four hours' notice before returning to port, noting that Tarragona vessels often operate much closer to land. They are advocating for a more flexible system that avoids wasting thousands of authorized fishing days, as happened during the last season.
