The Municipal Transport Company (EMT) of Tarragona has proposed a redistribution of urban bus lines, aiming to make them more efficient and expand territorial coverage starting from the last quarter of 2026.

The project, which will be debated in the next municipal plenary session in May, seeks to offer a more intuitive service for users, simplify routes, and improve connections between neighborhoods and health centers, as well as other strategic points in the city. This initiative includes the addition of three new buses to the network, a reduction in frequency for some lines, and an increase in services for others, such as line L-43.

"This is a commitment that optimizes existing resources and offers an efficient, accessible service adapted to the new mobility habits of citizens."

The new distribution will be carried out without changes to the driver workforce, as current legislation does not provide for an increase in staff. This proposal is the result of multidisciplinary work and an active listening process with citizens, considering that Tarragona's original urban transport layout dates back to the 1980s.
One of the main objectives is to improve connectivity between neighborhoods and key points such as Joan XXIII Hospital. For example, line L-85 in the Sant Salvador neighborhood will improve its route and frequency with a new vehicle, adding direct connections to the Sant Ramon CAP and the Institut Pont del Diable. In the same neighborhood, line L-5 will reduce its service interval to half an hour. In the Ponent neighborhoods, the merger of lines L-3 and L-30 will lead to improvements in frequencies and connectivity with the city center. Line L-6 will not be modified, and line L-43, serving the Complex Educatiu, will add two new afternoon services.
In Sant Pere i Sant Pau, line L-55 will extend its coverage to the area around Reial street and the train station, a point where line L-13 will also be extended, incorporating new early morning services. For the city center and maritime neighborhoods, line L-20 will be created, resulting from the merger of lines L-21 and L-23, to improve its frequency and make it circular.
This restructuring is part of a 12 million euro investment plan to acquire 33 buses by next year. Currently, thirteen vehicles are already in service, ten more will be incorporated in June, and the rest next year, thus renewing a significant part of the municipal fleet. With these modifications, the number of weekly services will increase from 1,163 to 1,180, and it is expected that nine out of ten residents will have a bus stop within 200 meters of their home.
