The Joan XXIII Hospital in Tarragona is set to become the only provincial capital hospital in Catalonia without a 24-hour mechanical thrombectomy service for stroke patients.

A budget agreement for 2026 between the PSC and Comuns parties will fund full-time service at Lleida's hospital, leaving Tarragona as the only major city excluded from the 24/7 network. Currently, the service only operates on weekdays during business hours.

"It is an evident grievance. The 24/7 service has been requested repeatedly, but Pané will not budge."

Local authorities in Reus, Valls, and Vila-seca have joined Tarragona in protesting the decision. Despite the Health Department's claims of insufficient staff, local medical data shows that over 10% of the 700 stroke cases recorded last year required urgent intervention.
