The National Archaeological Museum of Tarragona (MNAT) will reopen its main headquarters in Plaça del Rei this Christmas, after eight years closed for renovation works.

The facility, which closed its chapter at Tinglado 4 of the Port of Tarragona in late June, is now in the phase of transferring restored pieces and implementing new museography. The Minister of Culture, Sònia Hernández, highlighted that the new exhibition will be "21st-century" and will allow for a "much better" understanding of the Roman heritage of Tarraco and Catalonia as a whole.
The total investment in the renovation exceeds nine million euros. Hernández emphasized the museum's importance, stating that "Catalonia deserves to have this museum and Tarragona deserves to have this museum," and underscored the MNAT's "very important" collection with "top-level" finds.
One of the notable tasks has been the restoration of key pieces, which will be displayed "in all their splendor." Around a thousand pieces will be exhibited, selected from the 54,000 items in the MNAT's collection stored in its warehouses.
The new museography will incorporate resources to make the exhibition more understandable and contextualized for all visitors, not just experts. "We are working to create a first-class museum in Tarragona that appeals and engages everyone," stated Hernández.
The aim is to reinterpret history through "subaltern voices," such as women or children, who will narrate the past based on research criteria. In this regard, the immersive project "Els ulls de la història" (The Eyes of History) by the Department of Culture is supported.
