The scene across much of the Llevant area of Tarragona on Tuesday was desolate, with dozens of fallen trees, some on vehicles and homes, and others completely blocking streets. Firefighters worked intensely to clear vegetation from public roads and private properties.
The accumulated rainfall, reaching 77.4 litres per square metre, combined with hurricane-force winds, turned trees, mainly pines, into projectiles. Meanwhile, in some parts of the city centre, firefighters continued pumping water from the basements of several homes.
In La Móra, the Mediterrani avenue showed a worrying state from the middle of its route. Sidewalks were littered with branches and trunks of already cut trees, cordoned off by the Municipal Brigade and Civil Protection. A fallen pine at the intersection with Bages street affected the pavement, while on the other side of the avenue, two more trees were uprooted.
The most significant damage was concentrated in the section closest to the beach. At the height of Pare Arnesto square, an elm tree fell on two red cars, one of which was completely covered. About 50 metres away, at Comarques Catalanes square, another tree destroyed a Peugeot 206. The owner, Juan Torres, a resident of La Móra, had to wait for firefighters to remove the vehicle.
In Tamarit, the access to the municipality from the old N-340 also suffered the consequences of the storm. A large tree fell on two vehicles next to the Camping Caledonia. Firefighters from EPAF of Igualada worked on its felling, as part of the extensive operation that mobilized firefighters from all over Catalunya.
Urbanizations near the city, such as Entrepins and Cala Romana, echoed with the sound of electric saws to remove fallen trees. In the Boscos de Tarragona urbanization, access was blocked on the street due to fallen branches, and on Rossinyol street, three large pine trees blocked traffic.
Ruth, a resident near the forest, recounted how three pines fell on her house, but the 60-year-old iron roof resisted without leaks. The wrought iron gate of her property, however, broke from the impact of one of the trees.
The damage extended to the area's campsites, with trees falling on vehicles, caravans, and tents. Despite the extent of the damage, no injuries were reported.
In the city of Tarragona, firefighters responded to calls for broken windows in a home on Rovira i Virgili street, the detachment of a warehouse's false ceiling in the Francolí industrial estate, and flooding in a kitchen on Gavina street. Fallen leaves covered the streets, giving the city an autumnal appearance.
