Santiago Castellà, President of the Port of Tarragona, warned that Donald Trump's embargo threats could cause a major distortion in global trade, directly impacting the 17.18% of the port's annual traffic.

Trade figures from 2025 reveal a significant imbalance, with 4.7 million tons of imports from the United States compared to only 111,393 tons of exports. This means the port imports 42 times more volume than it sends to the US market.

"If these statements become reality, they would constitute a serious distortion for global trade and the economy."

The port's reliance on the US is centered on energy and agriculture. Crude oil accounts for 2.7 million tons, while cereals and flour exceed one million tons. These commodities are essential for the regional economy and the port's operational stability.
On the export side, which represents just 0.38% of the port's total activity, asphalt and chemical products are the main goods shipped. Local authorities are looking towards European Union diplomacy to maintain international trade laws and prevent further escalation.
