The Municipal Urban Planning Plan (POUM) of Calafell has been modified in the latest Council meeting to promote a new centrality between the nuclei of Calafell and Segur, seeking to strengthen urban cohesion.
One of the key actions is the transformation of the C-31 road, which will acquire a more urban character, modifying mobility and public spaces. In this context, the Mas Mel bridge will play a fundamental role in connecting both sides of the railway line.
The approved proposal maintains the idea from the 2011 POUM to turn the C-31 into an "urban boulevard" and modify the bridge to create a new square. The new solution simplifies the previously planned infrastructure, which included a new bridge, opting to widen the current one to avoid an unnecessary increase in vehicle traffic.
The mayor of Calafell, Ramon Ferré, highlighted that the new proposal will allow for the creation of a connection "more accessible, safe, and adapted to current needs," changing the concept of mobility centered on private vehicles.
The main novelty will be the widening of the Mas Mel bridge to incorporate a cycle lane and expand the sidewalks, improving daily commutes and facilitating a safe connection between Mas Mel Muntanya and Mas Mel Platja, currently limited for cyclists.
This cycling connection will be complemented by extending the bridge's route towards Mas Mel Muntanya, with a new dedicated path and a traffic light to cross the road to Mestral street, creating a continuous and safer route for non-motorized travel.
The C-31 will be elevated to directly connect with the railway bridge, while vehicle circulation will be managed by a new roundabout. This roundabout will provide access to the Bellamar, Bellamel, and Mas Mel sectors, and facilitate vehicle movements towards Tarragona.
The new arrangement aims to balance vehicular mobility with a better connection for pedestrians and cyclists, calming traffic and improving the connection between neighborhoods.
