The Catalan Tourism Agency is participating in the International Tourism Fair (Fitur) in Madrid, starting on Wednesday, January 21, to promote Catalonia's major cultural and sporting events scheduled for 2026.

This year's edition of Fitur, which runs until Sunday, has been deeply affected by the official mourning decreed by the Spanish Government following the tragic train accident in Adamuz, Córdoba. Due to this, Catalonia canceled the opening ceremony of its stand. This cancellation also coincides with the hospitalization of the President of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, who is recovering from pubic osteomyelitis.
The 46th edition of the fair brings together 10,000 companies from 161 countries and 967 exhibitors, focusing on sustainable growth and sector competitiveness. This event follows the announcement by the Ministry of Industry and Tourism that Spain broke a record for foreign visitors in 2025, reaching 97 million, with average spending rising to 135 billion euros.

The International Tourism Fair deeply regretted the fatal accident and expressed solidarity with the affected people.

The Catalan stand, which has participated in the fair for over 40 years, emphasizes a culturally intense 2026. Commemorations include the centenary of the death of Antoni Gaudí and 150 years since the birth of Pau Casals. The Reus City Council, Gaudí's birthplace, promotes the municipality based on its link with the architect, while the Pau Casals Year will be centered at the composer's museum in El Vendrell.
Sports also hold significant weight, especially with the promotion of the arrival of the Tour de France. The cycling event will kick off from Barcelona on July 4, with stages passing through Tarragona and Granollers. The Tarragona Provincial Council promotes cycling events on the Costa Daurada and Terres de l'Ebre, while the Costa Daurada and Terres de l'Ebre Nautical Station celebrates its twenty-fifth anniversary.
