Health Minister Olga Pané announced yesterday in the Catalan Parliament that the Government is studying how to extend the 24/7 thrombectomy service to Tarragona, Lleida, and Manresa, although she admitted that the lack of trained professionals is the main hurdle.

The Government of the Generalitat is evaluating how to offer the thrombectomy service, the most effective intervention to mitigate the effects of a stroke, uninterruptedly in key territories. This explanation was provided by Minister Olga Pané during a query by the Comuns parliamentary group regarding the stroke care situation in these areas.

"There are areas where professionals are not available. For this treatment, training in radiology is needed, as well as having performed about one hundred cases accompanied by other professionals."

Pané defended that the Department of Health follows the guidelines of the Stroke Master Plan, prioritizing safety. She also referred to the action opened by the Ombudsman regarding this issue, clarifying that it was a simple question and not a formal investigation.
The explanations did not satisfy the Comuns. David Cid, the group's spokesperson, accused the Department of using economic excuses and demanded a concrete plan to guarantee the availability of these treatments in Lleida, Tarragona, and Manresa next year.

"Why is it so important to have it in Girona and not in Tarragona?"

This debate comes shortly after the College of Physicians (COMT) honored Francesc Bové Armant, former director of CAP Tàrraco, who suffered a severe stroke in 2018 due to the lack of thrombectomy at Joan XXIII hospital. The COMT highlighted his commitment to public health and the demand for an equitable system.
