The FEHT considers that doubling the tax on stays in establishments is "deeply misguided" and does not meet criteria for economic stimulation or seasonality extension. The tourism sector in Costa Daurada and Terres de l'Ebre also opposes the municipal surcharge, arguing it creates confusion and competitive imbalances.
“"This decision comes at a time when we should be especially competitive and attractive as a destination. Doubling the tourist tax is a clearly dissuasive message for visitors."
The business entity denounces that applying the same tax in March and August penalizes low-season visitors and will have a negative impact on local tourism, such as short weekend getaways by Catalan citizens.
Another point of contention is the allocation of 25% of the revenue to housing policies. The FEHT argues that the tourism sector is not responsible for the housing crisis and should not finance the country's structural problems.
Finally, the business community demands a review of the operation of the Fund for the Promotion of Tourism, which will receive 75% of the total revenue. They request more transparency in resource management and effective sector participation in defining its destination, especially to alleviate the lack of investment in key infrastructure.
