The plan, which has an initial investment of 25,000 euros, initially focuses on areas such as Rambla Vella, Rambla Nova, the Font del Centenari area, and Carrer Major and Carrer Merceria. The Cleaning Councillor, Sonia Orts, detailed that the actions will progressively extend to the rest of the city once the initial results are evaluated.
“"The objective is to prevent them from generating health and coexistence problems. Many individuals carry out some actions, but they do them incorrectly. Now we will ensure they are closed."
The implemented measures are deterrent, approved, and respectful of animal welfare, including the installation of spikes, silicone sheets, and specific plates. Biologist Jordi Baucells indicated that a population decrease of between 60% and 70% is expected in just over two years, as the problem is structural.
“"This plan does not replace cleaning; rather, it complements it."
Baucells also highlighted the importance of the Port of Tarragona as a food source, noting that the port infrastructure has implemented measures to hinder the animals' access to feed. Furthermore, a citizen service has been opened to advise residents with pigeon problems at home, aiming to exceed 400 visits this year.
