The Department of Agriculture has launched an extraordinary line of aid totaling 2.3 million euros to support the beekeeping and rabbit farming sectors in Catalonia, which have been severely impacted by productivity losses.

These grants, which can amount to up to 16 euros per hive for professional beekeepers and 8 euros per animal for rabbit farmers, aim primarily to compensate for the economic losses incurred by the farms and help maintain their operations. The measure also seeks to provide liquidity to producers and ensure the continuity of these livestock activities, considered important for Catalonia's primary sector and rural communities.
The call for applications allocates 1.5 million euros to the beekeeping sector and 800,000 euros to the rabbit farming sector. Eligible applicants are holders of beekeeping and rabbit farming operations registered and active in the Catalan Livestock Register. For beekeeping, a minimum of 50 hives is required, with amounts up to 10 euros per hive for most operations and up to 16 euros for those practicing transhumance. In rabbit farming, a minimum of 15 breeding females is required, with an anticipated aid of up to 8 euros per breeding animal.
The aid calculation will be based on the latest animal census declared between January 1, 2026, and the day before the announcement's publication. Only animals not exceeding the authorized capacity for each farm in the Generalitat's livestock management system (GTR) will be counted.
These grants come at a critical time for both sectors. The Catalan beekeeping sector has seen a 8.3% decrease in operations since 2022, with a loss of nearly 12,400 hives. Furthermore, economic margins have been negative since 2018, with average losses of 5.51 euros per kilo of honey and 44.42 euros per hive annually. Meanwhile, the rabbit farming sector has experienced a 65.9% reduction in the number of farms since 2014, with a decrease of over 318,000 registered rabbits and average annual losses of 0.55 euros per rabbit.
Applications can be submitted electronically through the usual channels of the Generalitat de Catalunya, between October 10 and October 26, 2026.
