The town in Urgell remembered yesterday morning the events that took place during the Civil War with a solemn ceremony. The commemoration consisted of a simple floral offering in front of the monument dedicated to the victims, a work by the artist Serafina Balasch, located next to the north portal of the Church of Santa María.
“"It is necessary to transform remembrance into commitment."
The mayor, Sílvia Fernàndez, dedicated the offering to all victims and people who suffered the ravages of the conflict, emphasizing the importance of keeping historical memory alive to prevent these events from recurring. The act began at 9:30 AM with the sound of the bell tower's siren, the same one that used to alert the population to air raids.
The day included a guided visit to the air-raid shelter of the Church of Santa María, which was open to the public between 9:45 AM and 11:30 AM. This year, the commemoration coincided with Easter Sunday and the traditional singing of 'caramelles'.
Agramunt was subjected to about twenty bombings between April 5, 1938, and January 13, 1939, with a particular concentration during the Christmas holidays. The first of these attacks was the most devastating, with sixteen documented victims, although contemporary witnesses claimed that up to twenty-seven people were buried.
