The former municipal slaughterhouse in Agramunt is embarking on a new chapter as a cultural, heritage, and administrative center. Twenty years after the initial renovation project, the fully rehabilitated building will begin operating normally this June. Initially, it will be open weekdays mornings, coinciding with the gradual relocation of the municipal archive, which will include prior fumigation of the documents.
The intervention, exceeding one million euros in investment, culminates a long-awaited project by various governing teams. The inauguration was attended by the Minister of Culture, Sònia Hernández. The building, constructed in 1948 by architect Lluís Domènech i Torres, was operational until 2004.
After its closure, the property fell into disuse as a primary facility, although it housed local entities and served as a municipal warehouse. Rehabilitation works began in 2021, divided into two phases: the first, from November 2021 to May 2022, focused on the roof; the second, from November 2023 to this year, has enabled the functional transformation.
A key element is the creation of the new municipal archive, consolidating previously dispersed documentation, featuring a consultation room and a climate-controlled storage. Additionally, the space incorporates new cultural uses, such as a double-height lobby for the permanent exhibition of local festive imagery and the Espai Sió, dedicated to the natural and landscape heritage of the Ribera del Sió. The central courtyard will serve as a meeting point.
Funding includes the 1% cultural contribution from the Segarra-Garrigues canal, funds from the Generalitat, the Provincial Council of Lleida, European FEDER funds, and contributions from the Agramunt town council. A third phase is planned for the construction of a large multipurpose hall.
